Monopoly Television : MTV's Quest to Control the Music

by Jack Banks

An interesting expose' on MTV and how it has and does control what music gets played not only on it's station but ultimately, across the nation. The most interesting part for me was the history of the early days of MTV and how American music videos were so scarce that they would play anything. At that time, the video market in Europe was much more advanced so MTV played British videos and suddenly groups like Duran Duran and Flock of Seagulls were all the rage. From this incidental pay-ola came a fundamental change in the music industry from which it has yet to recover. Conform, make big bucks, or get out!

Interesting chaw.
